Atlanta, Georgia, November 1, 2025 — Atlanta has introduced the Southeast’s first citywide network of solar-powered smart benches, offering free device charging and real-time air quality data across more than 25 public parks. The initiative, launched on 1 November 2025 by the Atlanta Department of Parks and Recreation, aims to enhance urban sustainability and public amenities.
Each smart bench is equipped with integrated solar panels, enabling visitors to charge mobile devices at no cost while relaxing outdoors. In addition, built-in sensors provide instant air quality updates, supporting public health awareness and environmental education. The benches are designed to withstand weather and vandalism, ensuring long-term durability and accessibility for all residents.
Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms praised the project as “a significant step towards a greener, more connected city.” Local community groups collaborated in selecting installation sites, prioritising high-traffic areas and neighbourhood parks. City officials hope the network will inspire further innovation in public spaces and promote Atlanta as a leader in sustainable urban development.
