Atlanta, Georgia, November 1, 2025 — Atlanta’s West End neighbourhood is set to make history with the opening of the United States’ first public library powered entirely by geothermal and solar energy, scheduled for spring 2026. The innovative facility, located at 123 Ralph David Abernathy Boulevard, will serve as a model for sustainable public infrastructure nationwide.
The new library will feature a state-of-the-art geothermal system for heating and cooling, paired with a rooftop solar array designed to meet all electricity needs. Project leaders anticipate the building will achieve net-zero emissions, significantly reducing operational costs while providing a resilient community resource.
Fulton County Library System Executive Director Gayle Holloman described the project as “a transformative step for both the library and the community, demonstrating Atlanta’s commitment to clean energy and climate resilience.” The initiative has received strong support from local residents, civic groups, and educational partners, who are eager to see the library become a hub for environmental learning and innovation. Construction is expected to begin in January 2025.
